"If writing is the act of making thinking presentable, journaling is the act of thinking in process." that's such an excellent way of putting it wow...

"Girl...shut up omg you're not a tree" this killed me so I'm highlighting it but as always it's so good to just get a look into your thoughts and your perspectives, thanks so much for letting us in!!

the amount of times i go on tangents or just start waffling in my journal and end it by telling myself to shut up 😭😭 honestly it makes up at least 70% of my entries but it’s also what makes the practice so useful. it feels like i’m cleaning the gunk off my brain before doing “serious” writing like working on my novel or writing essays.

as always thank you for reading, hebs 🫂

Any post about journaling, I am sat! I’ve been journaling since I was about 7 or 8 years old and always love getting a glimpse into other people’s journals and journaling habits. Your entries are both hilarious and relatable. I love what you said about how messy and unstructured journaling should be. Before, I used to struggle with being as vulnerable as I wanted to because I feared that someone would pick up my journal and read (it happened when I was younger) but letting all the pressure go and allowing yourself to be as messy as you need to be is when you start to really enjoy journaling.

Thank you so much for reading, Fatima!

I’m jealous of you for having a journaling practice for so long because I would kill to read what kind of thoughts I had all those years ago. Were you able to keep those old journals safe? If I remember correctly I attempted a journal/dairy when I was about 10 years old but I have no clue where I placed the book 🤕😭

I totally understand. Unfortunately, I can't find the ones I kept before 10 😭 But I have the ones from when I was 10 years old to date, and it is so fun and cringe going through them! I actually wrote a post about it in 2023 here: https://open.substack.com/pub/anythingeverythingandbooks/p/hello-youngerfuture-me?r=15o05k&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

I have volumes of journals dating back to my childhood and it’s kind of wild to be able to randomly read my writing from any point from then to now. A couple of years ago, I started writing in a multimedia artist’s journal for the times when I’d rather express my feelings through collage, watercolor, or any other medium I’m feeling that day. I’ve made some of my favorite pieces in there and they’ve inspired other projects, too!

Ahhhhh I missed reading you!!!!!! (You reminded me I have some rubbish in my drafts but that will wait)

Ah I love this so much! Mostly because journaling can sometimes appear so much like a burden and something that needs to be clean and structured but in the end, who cares? It's just our mind going anywhere and everywhere - like the roots of a tree so maybe you're one who knows&@&@&@& but seriously, it comes from a place of comfort and respite and it's just so great to have that place to write and allow the head to wherever it wishes. Thank you for this article once again :')
